Sex Education and Religion ~ by Kashish

Sex education has long been source of anxiety for parents, especially those with strong religious beliefs. Many parents want to ensure the curriculum doesn’t undermine their moral and religious views. For decades, national Religious Right political groups have fanned the flames of this debate by urging opposition to comprehensive sexuality education. Thwarted in that approach, these groups have developed a new strategy: developing and marketing curricula that promote sectarian beliefs, censor information on contraception and disease prevention, and limit options to one: abstaining from all sexual activity until marriageAnd such conflicts between sex education and religion continues as it is one of those never ending ones....

I guess we all know about the four goals of Hinduism - Dharma, Artha, Kama and MokshaWe Indians even have a god for sex - Kama. So it is only natural that we have erotic sculptures on our temples. There have been many questions raised on the reason behind having erotic sculptures and sexual imagery in a place otherwise considered so 'holy' and 'pure'There are a few theories floating about but the most popular one seems to be that in order to enter a place so pure, you need to relieve yourself of all your desires and lust. There are multiple temples which are famous for their erotic sculpture as well. Some of them are Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh Sun Temple, Konark , Jagdish Mandir, Udaipur, Markandeshwar, Maharashtra, Padawali, Madhya Pradesh, Sun Temple, Gujarat, Osian, Rajasthan , Virupaksha, Hampi , Tripurantaka TempleKarnataka , Kailasa, Ellora , Ranakpur, Rajasthan , Bhoramdeo, Chattisgarh , Nanda Devi Temple, Almora , Lingaraja Temple, Bhubaneshwar.

So why consider that religion doesn’t allow sex or sex education...even our ancestors depicted sex and talked about it openly. So according to me, we should also normalise talking about sex and accept that it is not against our religions , values or beliefs . Teaching or talking about sex doesn’t mean that we are going against our religion or culture.
